A barcode scanner (or bar code reader) is a device that reads information encoded in a barcode and translates it into a digital format that can be used by a computer. Bar code scanners typically consist of a light source, a lens, and a light sensor that converts the light signal into an electrical signal.
There are several types of barcode readers, including laser-based readers, camera- based readers, and omni-channel readers. Each of these use different technologies and methods to decode barcode information. The three most popular barcode reader formats are handheld scanners, presentation scanners, and fixed mount scanners.
Laser-based barcode readers use a laser beam to read barcodes. They are the most common type of barcode reader and are often used in retail environments. They are fast, accurate, and can read barcodes from a distance. However, they can only read one-dimensional barcodes and are less effective at reading damaged or poorly printed barcodes.
Camera-based barcode readers use a camera to capture an image of the barcode. They are more versatile than laser-based readers and can read both one-dimensional and two-dimensional barcodes. They can also read damaged or poorly printed barcodes more effectively than laser-based readers. However, they are slower than laser-based readers and require more processing power to decode the barcode image.
Fixed mount scanners are designed for use in industrial environments, such as warehouses or manufacturing facilities. They are mounted to a surface and are used to scan items as they pass by on a conveyor belt. Fixed mount scanners are typically camera-based and are designed to read barcodes from a distance or at an angle. They are ideal for use in high-volume environments where speed and accuracy are critical.
Omni-channel barcode readers combine laser and camera-based technologies to read barcodes from multiple angles and distances. They are the most versatile type of barcode reader and can read both one-dimensional and two-dimensional barcodes. They can also read barcodes from a distance, at an angle, or even while the barcode is in motion.
The three top barcode reader formats are: handheld, presentation, and fixed mount scanners.
Handheld scanners are the most common type of barcode reader. They are portable and can be easily carried around by users. They are ideal for use in retail environments, where products need to be scanned quickly and accurately. Handheld scanners can be laser-based or camera-based and are available in both corded and cordless versions.
Presentation scanners are designed to be stationary and are often used in point-of-sale environments. They are typically placed on a countertop or mounted to a stand and are used to scan products as they are presented to the scanner. Presentation scanners are laser-based and are ideal for scanning large or bulky items.
